My watercolours float in a world of liquid light which largely dictates a lack of obvious structure. Most people are uncomfortable with abstract paintings because their instinct demands that they look for some detail, outline or shape to which they can relate or identify. Pastels have enabled me to achieve an entirely different balance between colour and form wherein a particular natural phenomenon such as beach, moon or line of trees is quite recognisable. Communicating with the viewer in a more realistic and human way gives me great pleasure. Similarly to the watercolours, the pastels range in size up to A3.
